Gerhardt Meintjes is a fine art painter, in his spare time from life as a helicopter pilot. He is a diploma engineer, and lives with his wife in Bedford, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Gerhardt was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1968.
"From an early age I was busy with pencil and paper, and started painting later on with watercolour. I created pictures of helicopters and aircraft, mostly while in the South African Air Force. It was only in 2002 that I started painting with oil, a wonderful medium, for the first time. I have tried different mediums, and switch between oil and acrylics, depending on specific use, and ease of use required. I attempt different subjects with no specific genre, but anything that provides a challenge in the mediums I use.
I admire the lives and works of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, the Impressionists, and Vincent van Gogh. Living artists like Teresa Elliott, Jeremy Mann, and other representational artists are followed, and studied. I am also very interested in contemporary work, to the likes of Jackson Pollock. South African art has many masters and talented artists, and I am proud to be family of the artist and author, Johannes Meintjes, whose work, and life, I admire."
